Freshwater ciliate Colpidium campylum (400x)
These are freshwater ciliates of the species Colpidium campylum, characterized by its kidney-shaped cell. The cilia of this protozoan are arranged in rows, and inside you can see the two nuclei that are characteristic of many other ciliates, a more or less central macronucleus, and one micronucleus, slightly smaller.
Because it feeds on bacteria, Colpidium campylum is a microorganism involved in the process of self-purification of water. When the concentration of bacteria is very high in the water, and consequently food is abundant, the population of this protozoan multiplies. So, this species is regarded as a test-microorganism and is used in bioassays with a broad range of applications for single toxicants and contaminant mixtures, such as effluents.

Do we really only use 10% of our brain?
As the new film Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman is set to be released in the cinemas this week, I feel I should attempt to dispel the unfounded premise of the film – that we only use 10% of our brains. Let me state that there is no scientific evidence that supports this statement, it is simply a myth.
The concept behind the film is that through the administration of a new cognitive enhancing drug, our female lead character, Lucy, becomes able to harness powerful mental capabilities and enhanced physical abilities. These include telekinesis, mental time travel and being able to absorb information instantaneously. Viewed as such, the human brain should be essentially capable of these feats, we just fail to push our capacity. So if we can unlock the “unused” 90% of the brain we too could be geniuses with super powers?

Casual reminder that in one of Leonardo da Vinci’s many notebooks containing innumerable artistic and scientific sketches and notes of incomprehensible important, there is a sketch of two penises with legs and tails walking towards a crudely drawn anus.
The sketch was most likely done by Leonardo’s apprentice Salai, who was not only very likely one of Leonardo’s lovers, but who was also infamously mischievous. Better yet, the anus is literally labeled “Salai.”
So either Salai drew these while Leonardo wasn’t looking just to annoy his boyfriend, or Leonardo himself put actual time and energy into drawing these. Either way, the human race is truly blessed to have made such a discovery.
There are dick drawings like the ones you see on desks in school in Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks. Please cherish this information.

Perihelion and Aphelion
The closest point to the Sun in a planet’s orbit is called perihelion. The furthest point is called aphelion. Notice how the planet moves fastest at perihelion and slowest at aphelion.
The time during the year that aphelion and perihelion (when we are closet to the sun) changes over a roughly 100,000 year cycle, known as the Milankovitch Cycle. Our orbit around the sun is not a circle, it is an ellipse with an eccentricity of about 0.0167. This orbit both changes shape and rotates around the sun much like a spirogram tracing out a flower-like shape.
It is summer in the northern hemisphere, a time when people often say things like, “We are closer to the sun than we are in winter.” This is not really true. Summer is a product of the angle at which Earth is tilted, right now Earth is tilted so that the northern regions lean toward the sun. In terms of orbit we are actually at the furthest point Earth gets from the sun.
This has interesting implications in terms of the global climate. This means that right now winters tend to be warm (the planet is closer to the sun) and summers cool (the planet further from the sun). In the big picture this places us in the midst of a global cool cycle, the type of situation that tends to lead to ice ages, like the one we are emerging from.
